Poll 15 (August): Is Spoetzl a Craft Brewery?
- No (57%) 47% in 2008
- Yes (35%) 47% in 2008
- Perhaps (7%)
I've always felt bad about not liking Shiner (something I mentioned before) and so this makes me feel a little vindicated. Though the fact that I don't like "craft" brews sounds a little pretentious, the presumed opposite is large scale, industrialized beer like Budweiser and Coors. Shiner is Texas' answer to these rather nasty (preservative-filled? I don't know about this) brews.
I have a hard time classifying Spoetzl. Then again, I have a hard time with the whole craft brewery definition. But here's my take: If the definition by the Brewers Association can be expanded to include Boston Beer Company, then Spoetzl is a craft brewer.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you there: The terminology is definitely fuzzy. And now that Budweiser is making an "American" Ale...
ReplyDeleteHmm, how about 'Small-batch Craft Brews' as a term?
ReplyDeleteI like that. Gives a clear sense of size and ambition/intent. I suppose if we were to get really serious about the definition, we'd have to denote the upper limit of "small-batch." And think about the amount of beer a brewery like Dogfish Head puts out without losing that craft brew quality. I suppose there's always a gray area, which is what makes it fun.
